August 2007

We are very pleased to introduce you to our newest guild member, Gerald Pisarzowski, a Toronto-based photographer specializing in platinum/palladium prints. Known for his expertise with the platinum/palladium process, he is sought after both for his own prints and for his print-making abilities.

While reviewing some of Gerald's images, I was reminded of what Walker Evans once said: "The photographer is a joyous sensualist, for the simple reason that the eye traffics in feelings, not in thoughts. What keeps the photographer going is pure absorption, an incurable childishness... The life of his guild is combined scramble and love's labor lost."

New Guild Member: Gerald Pisarzowski

Scott's Falls, OntarioIt seems strange to talk about the "decisive moment" with relationship to the landscape, but anyone who seeks to express himself using the landscape does work in that concept. "I think you spend time honing technical skills," Gerald has said, "so that you are ready for those moments when everything seems to click. It's not luck; it's a matter of being there at the 'decisive moment.'"

Mostly self-taught, Gerald is constantly searching out images that speak both to him personally, and also, hopefully, to the viewer. He has said that a successful image is one that involves the viewer, one that makes you stop and take a second look. To achieve this quality, he has been drawn to the platinum/palladium process for its unique abilities to add feeling and depth to the scene.

Above you see Gerald's 8x10 platinum/palladium print entitled "Scott's Falls, Ontario." To see this and other works available in our Store, please click here.

B&W Magazine has included several of my images along with a wonderful interview written by David Best in the October 2005 edition of the magazine (Issue 39). My portfolio was one of thirty-six selected from over 700 submissions and is featured in the Spotlight section of the magazine.

A Month of Photography is the first annual photography festival in Mississauga and features the work of 52 established and emerging artists in 22 venues throughout the City. I'm delighted to be included in this exhibition and my work is on view at the Delta Meadowvale Resort and Conference Centre. My show is entitled Edges Reflections and Forms and includes a new hand coated platinum image of Mary Ann Falls in Cape Breton and two 32 x 40 inch Lambda prints. The work will be on view at the Delta Meadowvale until February 2006.

In 2004 Photosensitive invited 100 Canadian photographers to capture their vision of water and create pictures that would connect us all. I was one of the photographers invited to collaborate in the Life of Water and to express myself through one single subject, the power, majesty and beauty of the Niagara River. The show opened in Toronto at the Allen Lambert Galleria, BCE Place, September 7-24, 2005 and will travel first to Collingwood, Collingwood Pubic Library, November 1-26, 2005, then to Vancouver, Moat Gallery, Main Vancouver Public Library, February 1-14, 2006, and lastly Montreal, Maison de la Culture, Cotes-des-Neiges, March 2-April 16, 2006.
